A thought from Rose

The Saturday market

Rosemery

Photo accompanying “The Saturday market”

Getting to know who grows what I eat changed the way I cook — and talk.

The woman at the vegetable stall already knows I take coriander every week. Last time, she set a bunch aside before I arrived.

Shopping is meeting people too

At the supermarket I went through the till without looking up. At the market I come home with recipes, stories and sometimes a lemon as a gift.

“Some places sell food. Others sell belonging.”
