A thought from Rose

The books I reread

Going back to a familiar story isn’t repetition: the one who changed is me.

I reread some books every few years. Not for the plot, which I know by heart, but to find out what they have to say to the person I’ve become.

The same book, a different reader

A sentence I underlined at twenty now seems naive to me. Another one I had ignored now seems written for me.

“Rereading is visiting an old house and noticing the furniture is where it was — we are the ones who changed size.”
